In a inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his term.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The 34-year-old figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring counsel to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for worry of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
